The Rosario Islands is an archipelago about 100 kilometres from Cartagena. The archipelago is one of the 46 Natural National Parks of Colombia. The series of 30 islands offers guests crystal clear waters and white sand beaches and they are considered some of the prettiest islands in Colombia.
While you are visiting the Rosario Islands, you can kayak, paddle-board, and snorkel or scuba dive in the coral reefs that are home to incredibly diverse marine life, flora and fauna.
You can choose to either visit on a day trip or stay the night on the islands. Day trips leave Cartagena early in the morning and arrive at Isla Grande after an hour long boat ride. Depending on the package that you book, this may or may not include lunch and activities. Make sure to ask before booking anything so that you know what you are paying for.
If you want to stay overnight (which we highly recommend), we suggest booking your accommodation in advance. This allows you to let the boat know where to drop you off and then you aren’t stuck carrying your bags in the hot sun. Playa Libre is the most popular beach on Isla Grande. Since it is popular with both locals and tourists, a trip there may give you a very interesting glimpse into “Island life” as people enjoy a day at the beach. Although it is popular, it doesn’t tend to get too crowded unlike Playa Blanca.
Another reason to spend the night in the Rosario Islands is for the opportunity to swim with bioluminescence in Laguna Encantada (or the Enchanted Lagoon) . These magical little plankton sparkle to life as you swim through the water and let you live out your Disney princess fantasy.
While you are there, make sure to check out the beach clubs. These exclusive clubs usually have comfortable day beds with great views over the water, good food, and a full bar. Although they can get pricey, they are well-worth the money if you are looking for the ultimate in relaxation.
