The temperature in Cartagena always hovers around 80 degrees but the amount of rain changes dramatically based on the season.

December – March is the dry season when you can expect oodles of sunshine. It is the best time to lounge around on the beaches and explore the city. The ocean breeze makes for cool evenings which can feel like absolute heaven on sunburnt skin. The city is bustling and the nightlife scene is buzzing.

However, this is always the busiest time of the year. Cartagena is extremely popular amongst Colombians and international travelers alike so you may feel like you are fighting off throngs of other tourists. And remember, this is a destination well-known for nightlife. Things can get VERY loud and rowdy. If you are a light sleeper, traveling as a family or just someone who values peace and quiet, this is NOT the time to come.

If you want a more laid back vacation, then it would be a good idea to visit during the low season which lasts from August – November. Not many people are traveling and you can find good travel deals.

However, this is also the rainy season so you may not find yourself relaxing at the beach as much as you would have hoped. Cartagena can also get very, very humid. Be prepared to be a bit pretty sweaty while you are here and pack clothes that dry fast and breathe easily.

The shoulder season from April (excluding Easter week depending on what weekend it falls on) to July kind of offers the best of both worlds. The crowds have thinned out a bit and the hotels are a bit quieter. The weather is good with lots of sunshine. Keep in mind that this may coincide with summer vacation in United States when prices skyrocket and airports are crowded beyond belief. Since Colombia is becoming more and more popular, it may be wise to book your flights early or book extremely last minute (if your travel plans are flexible) to get the best deals on flights.
