If you are a nature lover and want to see Colombia’s wild side, one of the most unique things to do is visit the Volcan del Totumo. This tiny volcano is only 15 meters tall and features a mud bath/crater at its peak.
According to legend, the volcano used to be active and spit out fire, ash and lava before a priest sprinkled holy water into it. The priest believed that the volcanic activity was the work of the devil and he wanted to drive him away.
Whether it was the power of holy water or geothermal changes in the environment, the volcano is very different than both active and dormant one. The crater is now full warm mud. The mud is believed to help detoxify your body, treat inflammation, and have cleansing properties thanks to the chemical composition of the mud which includes silica, magnesium, aluminum, calcium, sulfur, and iron.
Thanks to its proximity to Cartagena, the volcano is now a very popular tourist attraction for people visiting the city. It can hold 10-15 people at a time and is accessible by a staircase.
After you soak up all of the restorative properties of the mud, you can then go wash off in the nearby lagoon.
