This large cultural space is relatively new on the Cartagena arts scene (it opened in 2014) but it has a lot to offer. The permanent gallery features well-known painters and sculptors while the temporary space hosts regular exhibitions by Colombian artists. There is also an antique store, chapel, farmer’s market, and hotel on-site.

This spectacular museum showcases the incredibly high-quality craftsmanship of the indigenous Colombian population. The attention to detail is exquisite and it is impossible to imagine that the pieces were created centuries ago.

While the walls of Getsemani can’t really be considered a gallery in the normal sense of the word, there is no better way to learn about 21st century Colombia. Furthermore, if you really want to try and understand the modern personality of a city, one of the best ways to do is through the local street art.
Getsemani has always been a bit overshadowed by the more sophisticated old walled city but this is quickly changing. Street art, and the artists who created it, has transformed the grey concrete walls to a kaleidoscope of colors and the neighborhood is now a tourist hotspot.
The neighborhood is a must-visit for art lovers and just a few minutes’ walk from the walls of the old city. Read more about Getsemani’s art scene here.

Cartagena’s Museum of Modern Art features a small collection from both local and international artists. You can also find a photo exhibit that chronicles the transformation of Cartagena from a small Spanish walled town to one of Colombia’s biggest cities. The museum is set in a gorgeous colonial building and it is a great place to escape the heat in the middle of the day.
