One of the best ways to explore a city is through its museums. The history, art, culture, food, and music of a place can all be better understood by spending a few hours in its cultural institutions. Luckily, Cartagena has a fascinating variety of museums that will be sure to please even the most jaded traveler. Below is a list of our favorite museums to escape to on a rainy day!

One of the most unique museums to visit is the Museo de Oro. Although the museum is much smaller than the main Museo de Oro in Bogota, you are still able to get a fascinating look into Colombia’s indigenous population and the gold masterpieces that they were able to create. The museum features gold jewelry and figurines. Most of the artwork on display in Cartagena’s gold was made by the Zenu who live in the plains south of Cartagena.
The Spanish Inquisition was one of the most tragic times in history. Thousands upon thousands of innocent people were executed for the “crime” of blasphemy, heresy, and witchcraft. Cartagena had its own Palace of Inquisition and it is believed that up to 900 people were investigated there. The palace is now home to Cartagena’s history museum and features displays on the history of Spanish torture methods.

When you are in a city that became rich through commerce and slavery, it is essential to visit the Naval Museum if you want to truly understand the city’s past, present, and future. The Museo Naval del Caribe is an interactive museum situated in an old schoolhouse. Here you can learn about Cartagena’s naval and general history and you can even see canons and artifacts in the outdoor courtyard.

Pedro Claver was a missionary sent to Cartagena by the Catholic Church in 1610. When he arrived, he was astonished by the poor treatment of African slaves. He then dedicated his life to helping them. He became the patron saint of slaves. His house has been preserved and it now operates as a museum.
